Artists of Sword & Sorcery: Neal Adams (1941-2022)

Adams is one of a core of pros who promoted S&S comics in their infancy along with Frank Frazetta and Wally Wood. Oddly though he has drawn very few seminal pieces his work is everywhere and often uncredited as with Sword of Sorcery #1 (February-March 1973), Conan the Barbarian #44 – #45 (November-December 1974), and Wulf the Barbarian #2 (April 1975).

He did covers for Savage Tales, Ironjaw and Conan the Barbarian. In Savage Tales #4 (May 1974) he was one of the inkers on “Night of the Dark God”. Neal did occasional pieces for Conan the Barbarian like #49 “The Curse of the Golden Skull” (April 1975) and the record comic “Crawler in the Mists” reprinted in #116 (November 1980). Savage Sword of Conan #1 (August 1974) featured his co-inking on “Red Sonja”, #2-3 (October-December 1974) with “Beast From the Abyss”. He did art assist for Gil Kane on BlackMark issue #3-4 (December 1974-February 1975) and inked #14 (September 1976) “Shadows of Zamboula”.

Neal was hired to work on the film Conan the Barbarian (1982) as a storyboard artist. Savage Sword #60 (January 1981) showed some of this work. Neal has done book illustration and portfolios of Conan. He was set designer/costumer for the stage play Warp which later became a comic book. (Not drawn by him.) His work has influenced so many others including Alain Weiss and Mike Grell. (Myself personally, I would never have become a reader at all if he hadn’t done the covers for the Ballantine Tarzan novels around 1975. His artwork drew me to those books and helped me to become someone who loves to read. Thanks, Neal.)
