If you missed last time….
The final phase of Henry Kuttner’s career saw some big changes. A final “Lewis Padgett” tale for Astounding in 1953 marked the end of an era. The majority of new SF was published under a new pseudonym “C. H. Liddell” and in a variety of lesser magazines. Kuttner also moved away from Science Fiction, writing a four novel Mystery series about Michael Gray. This is a direction he might have taken from Fredric Brown’s success in the Mystery field.
The 1950s also saw the beginning of the repackaging of Kuttner/Moore. Many old stories saw reprinting in new magazines. (I have not listed all the reprints, only those with new artwork.) Collections of their work also began. Kuttner worked on a Masters Degree in English literature at USC.
Henry Kuttner died on February 3, 1958 in Los Angeles, CA of a heart attack. It has often been lamented that such a promising writer should die so young. I suspect the Kuttners would have left SF for more remunerative and prestigious venues such as Mystery and television. Catherine’s production of Science Fiction basically ends with Henry’s passing. She later wrote for shows like Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip, and The Alaskans.
