A. Hyatt Verrill – Science Fiction Writer

Alpheus Hyatt Verrill (1871-1954) is an unlikely early Science Fiction writer. He traveled throughout North and South America and was a friend of Theodore Roosevelt. (It is much more likely he should have been a writer for Adventure like Arthur O. Friel.) Despite being the author of the most popular book on tying knots and a boys’ adventure series called The Radio Detectives, Verrill became one of Hugo Gernsback’s first new regulars at Amazing Stories in 1926. Basing his work on Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, he satisfied the new Pulp’s need for ‘similar but new’ works to those great writers. E. F. Bleiler says of him: “more literate than most of their competition, but stodgy…”
