Tom Sutton(1937-2002) is without exception my favorite artist at Charlton. He, of course, drew for Warren and Marvel too. He also did a few for First, Skywald and DC. What surprises me the most is how he is not immediately mentioned in the same breath with Berni Wrightson when you talk comic book horror. because despite the forays into Sword & Sorcery and superheroes, it was Horror that Tom Sutton was born for.
Here is a selection of some of his best covers. (I left out the Lovecraft ones I already used and the werewolf ones I am going to use later.) His covers have a mood that I love that his pen and ink doesn’t. He blends with a pastel quality we haven’t seen since Margaret Brundage and the Weird Tales covers. Where most cover art goes for bold and obvious imagery, Tom gave us subtly and weirdness. (Too bad the comics inside didn’t often live up to these strange explorations. It should be no surprise Tom was a Lovecraft fan and wrote as well as drew several Mythos pieces.
Thanks to GCD for the covers.
