Berni was one of the early comic book artists who produced pre-Conan the Barbarian work and helped to develop an audience for Sword & Sorcery comics. He was drawn away from the genre by his success with Swamp Thing and horror comics, where he is best known to this day. He also did a few jobs like the cover for The Conan Grimoire (1972).
