Artists of Sword & Sorcery: Walt Simonson (1946-)

Walt Simonson has worked largely with superheroes but has made a few contributions to Sword & Sorcery comics, in particular an early Star*Reach parody piece called “A Tale of Sword & Sorcery” (April 1974). He drew “Young Fafhrd” in Sword of Sorcery #4 (October 1973) and “The Sunken Land” in #5 (November-December 1973). In Savage Sword of Conan #7 (August 1975) to #17 (January 1977) he drew the six-parter Robert E. Howard’s “The Hyborian Age”. (Thanks Terry Allen!) He also drew Hercules Unbound #7-12 (October-November 1976-August-September 1977). For two issues he was inked by legend Wally Wood, who began the series. In 1983, Walt Simonson did a run in Thor that showed his S&S roots. (Walt got a cameo in the first Thor movie.) From September 2004-August 2006 Walt drew Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer. This graphic novel, written by Michael Moorcock, goes into Elric’s youth and shows how he became worthy of being a prince. Like Mike Grell or Tim Truman, Walt writes as often as he draws.
