Frank Belknap Long was a veteran Pulpster by 1950. He had written for Weird Tales, Astounding Science-Fiction and many other Pulps. He had also written for comic books, creating the template from which all 1950s Horror comics would come. The decade that would see the Pulps end. FBL become an editor for the magazines that followed the Pulps. Beginning with The Saint and Fantastic Universe, he would later edit Satellite Science Fiction, Short Stories and a long stint on Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine.
The 1960s saw Frank move into paperbacks, both Science Fiction as well as Gothics under the name Lyda Belknap Long. (Lyda was Frank’s wife’s name.) The 1970s would see a renewal in interest in the Cthulhu Mythos. FBL published his last collections with Arkham House along with a bio of his friend, H. P. Lovecraft. In 1978 he won the Lifetime Achievement Sward from the World Fantasy Award. In 1987, the Stokers would also award him that honor.
Despite the accolades, when Frank died in 1994, he was buried in a potter’s field for indigents. Later his friends would have his remains moved to New York City’s Woodlawn Cemetery. Frank is gone but the remarkable body of work he left behind still fascinates. Though he was proud to have been a good friend of H. P. Lovecraft, he was so much more than a mere acolyte.
