Ernesto Chan was born in the Phillipines in 1940. He came to America in 1970 but had to work as Ernie Chua because of an error on his birth certificate. He got his start working on DC horror titles like House of Secrets and The Unexpected in 1972. He is better known as the inker for John Buscema’s Conan the Barbarian (His strong inks made John Buscema’s pencils have a fuller look) and Sal Buscema’s The Incredible Hulk. From 1975-1976 he worked on DC’s Claw the Unconquered and then Marvel’s Kull the Destroyer in 1977.

Ernie inked a lot of greats such as John Buscema, Gil Kane and Rich Buckler but I wanted to include only pieces here that he did alone.

Here a couple of Not-Quite Sword & Sorcery covers that rock all the same.

Ernie was frequently in Savage Sword of Conan as a pin-up artist. In Savage Sword of Conan #79 (August 1982) he got his own portfolio called “Chan’s Barbarians”.
