Art by Gray Morrow

Artists of Sword & Sorcery: Gray Morrow (1934-2001)

Gray Morrow (1934-2001) was one of the early cheerleaders for Sword & Sorcery along with Wally Wood and Frank Frazetta. He was one of the legendary artists who did everything from book covers to magazine illos, even worked on Ralph Bakshi’s Spider-man cartoons. He worked for Warren’s horror magazines, contributing pieces like the cover of Creepy #14 and “Dark Kingdom” (June 1966). He did the covers for Donald Wolhem’s Avon Fantasy Readers as well as many Ace paperbacks like Lin Carter’s Thongor novels. Morrow’s strip “Orion” was one of the first independents that was later reprinted in Heavy Metal and elsewhere. He was an illustrator for Prince Valiant (1970) and later did other newspaper work like the short-lived Sword of Shannara comic strip (February 13-April 19, 1978) . He won the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist 1966-1968, three times in a row.
