Art by Steve Ditko and Wally Wood

Artists of Sword & Sorcery: Steve Ditko (1927-2018)

Steve, along with Wally Wood, Gray Morrow and Frank Frazetta, was one of the old pros who did Sword & Sorcery comics in the late 1960s before Marvel’s phenomenal success with Conan the Barbarian. Unlike new artists like Jeff Jones or Berni Wrightson, Steve’s reputation was already made when he came to S&S. Steve was the original artist on Spider-man and Doctor Strange. Working with Archie Goodwin, Steve produced several strips for Warren including “Black Magic” (Eerie #5 September 1966), “Where Sorcery Lives” (Creepy #14 April 1967) and “Thane part 1” (Creepy #15 June 1967) and “Warrior of Death (Eerie #10 July 1967). He co-wrote and pencilled Stalker (June/July 1975-December1975/January1976) working with legend Wally Wood. He would continue to experiment with strips for Star*Reach Productions with “The Summoning” (Imagine #4 November 1978).

  1. Reading “Where Sorcery Lives” actually changed my life! It led me to recognize Sword & Sorcery when I saw it on Frazetta’s cover on the Lancer Conan the Warrior, which in turn opened to me the mystic portal of pulp fiction. This all made me a rabid reader, then a student, then a scholar, then a writer!
