Sword & Sorcery Comics

Sword & Sorcery Comics, and those that will appeal to S&S fans, have only really existed since 1950. Robert E. Howard invented the sub-genre with “The Shadow Kingdom” (Weird Tales, August 1929) . The first true comic to use the heroic fantasy theme properly was Gardner F. Fox and John Giunta’s “Crom the Barbarian” in Avon’s Out of This World Adventures #1, July 1950. The big break came in October 1970 with Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian with Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith. Since then there have been many different variations on Howard’s model.
